Faith Beyond the Finish Line: Staying Connected After Graduation

Your faith journey doesn’t end at graduation — it’s just getting started.

At Legacy, we have a strategic plan to make disciples of everyone who attends our church. A key part of this plan is Legacy Landmarks, which guide individuals from infancy through a person’s development. One such milestone is high school graduation—a pivotal moment both in life and in a disciple’s journey with Jesus. It’s a time when a student leaves home and must decide if he or she is going to continue to grow in faith. Our goal is for every student to remain faithful and become a disciple-maker wherever life takes them.

Unfortunately, many don’t. A 2019 study by Barna Research, an evangelical polling firm, revealed that 64% of students leave their faith after high school. It’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the remaining 36% are growing spiritually—only that they attend church semi-regularly.[i]

Lifeway Research identified five main reasons young adults (ages 18–22) leave the faith:

  1. They moved to college and didn’t prioritize church.
  2. Church members appeared judgmental or hypocritical.
  3. They lacked meaningful connections within the church.
  4. They disagreed with the church’s views on political or social issues.
  5. Work responsibilities got in the way.[ii]

To address this, authors David Kinnaman and Mark Matlock wrote Faith for Exiles: 5 Ways for a New Generation to Follow Jesus in Digital Babylon.[iii] Their research found that only 1 in 10 young Christians are what they call “resilient disciples”—those who continue following Jesus despite cultural pressures. These resilient disciples share five key traits:

  1. A personal commitment to Jesus.
  2. Belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
  3. Active involvement in Christian community beyond Sunday services.
  4. Confidence in the Bible as the true and inspired word of God.
  5. A faith that remains relevant in today’s world, often expressed through statements like:
    • “I want to follow Jesus in a way that connects with the world I live in.”
    • “God is working outside the Church, and I want to be part of that.”
    • “I want to be a Christian without isolating myself from the world.”

Research shows that students with a strong biblical foundation and a faith-based community are far more likely to grow spiritually after graduation. At Legacy, we partner with families to help students build that foundation, and after graduation, we aim to equip you with resources to stay connected and keep growing in your faith through this next stage of life.

Senior Checklist

Here are some steps to think through as you enter the next phase of your life:

    • On the website, read their vision, mission, and belief statements.
    • Make a list of the churches and on campus ministries that align with your biblical beliefs.
  • Try out the churches and on-campus ministries you researched.
  • After about a month or two, choose a church and ministry to call home, start serving, and join a life group!

Our Beliefs and Heritage

Our Beliefs

  • Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God who died for our sins and arose from the dead. (1 Corinthians 15:1-8)
  • The Bible is the inspired word of God – a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. (2 Timothy 3:16)
  • Every person has worth as a creation of God, but that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
  • Forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life are available to those who trust Christ as Savior and Lord. (John 3:16)

  • Those accepting Christ should repent of sin, confess their faith and be baptized into Him. (Romans 10:9; Acts 2:38)

  • The Church is the body of Christ on Earth, empowered by the Holy spirit and exists to save the lost and edify the saved (Ephesians 4:1-16).
  • Jesus Christ will one day return to Earth and reign forever as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

our heritage

Why does Legacy Christian Church just call itself a “Christian” church? To answer that question, one must understand the history and purpose of the Restoration Movement (also called the Stone-Campbell movement), which is our heritage.

The Restoration Movement began in America around 1800 focused on the goal of restoring the church to the order and ideals pictured in the New Testament. The two primary concerns of the movement’s founding fathers were:

  1. The unity of all Christians based on scripture rather than the subjective concepts so prevalent in denominational Christianity. (John 17:20, 21)
  2. An uncompromising commitment to the Bible as God’s inspired, authoritative Word and the Church’s only rule for faith and practice. They believed it was the various creeds and denominational structures that most divided Christians. The restoration pioneers believed that divided state of Christendom was the greatest hindrance to the church fulfilling its primary mission – the evangelism of the world.

This vision of a unified, undenominational church following the faith and pattern of the New Testament captured the imagination of thousands and became the fastest growing religious group of nineteenth century America. Today, in all of her expressions, the Restoration movement remains the largest religious group indigenous to the United States. Today, over 6,000 independent autonomous congregations compose a loose knit worldwide “brotherhood” with about two million people in membership. Together, these congregations support over 1,500 missionaries, 35 Bible colleges, three seminaries and several hundred para-church organizations (publishing companies, benevolent agencies, youth organizations, campus ministries, etc.).
